Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does Severn Rivers Ecology do?
Answer: We are an ecological consultancy supporting landowners, businesses, environmental organisations and statutory authorities to implement nature-based solutions that enhance biodiversity and ecological resilience across the Severn catchment and beyond. As the trading arm of Severn Rivers Trust, all of our work is guided by the same charitable objectives, and all profits are fed back into the charity.
2. Which areas do you operate in?
Answer: We are based in the Midlands, but our staff are spread right across the Severn catchment, and we operate anywhere within the British Isles.
3. What types of ecological surveys do you offer?
Answer: We provide a range of tailored ecological surveys to meet your project needs, including baseline habitat appraisals, river and watercourse assessments, E-Fishing and aquatic invertebrate surveys, invasive species surveys, and more. We provide advice and recommendations around sustainable land use, as well as habitat creation design and management plans.
4. What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), and how can you help?
Answer: Biodiversity Net Gain is a planning requirement in the UK that ensures developments deliver measurable improvements to biodiversity. We can support both buyers and sellers with BNG assessments, habitat planning and delivering net gain outcomes tailored to regulatory standards.
5. Do you offer woodland planting or carbon offset services?
Answer: Yes — we can support woodland establishment and carbon offsetting schemes to help businesses improve their environmental credentials, contribute to climate goals, and support biodiversity.
6. Who are your typical clients?
Answer: Our clients include landowners, developers, statutory bodies, utility companies, environmental organisations, and others seeking ecological expertise for sustainable development and habitat enhancement.
7. How can you support me with my land or ecological project?
Answer: Good ecological planning helps you understand landscape value, fulfil regulatory requirements (like BNG), enhance habitat value, and align your project with nature-based solutions and sustainable practices. We are highly experienced in providing tailored advice and practical delivery to maximise environmental outcomes; we are also well versed in permitting requirements, which can help to streamline projects.
8. How long do your surveys and reports take?
Answer: Timelines depend on the type and scale of work required. Once we understand your project’s scope and objectives, we’ll provide an estimated schedule and deliverables. We would usually aim to complete reports within 6 weeks of site visits.
9. Do you provide advice for farmers and land managers?
Answer: Yes — we offer expert land management advice including agri-environment support, water quality guidance, and help accessing environmental grants or stewardship schemes.
10. How do you ensure your work is scientifically robust?
Answer: Our work is grounded in science-based methodologies and best practices, with deep expertise in freshwater ecology and terrestrial environments. We tailor surveys and plans to recognised standards and regulatory frameworks.
11. Are you a charity or a commercial organisation?
Answer: We are the consultancy arm of Severn Rivers Trust. While we operate commercially, all profits are reinvested into the charity’s mission to protect and restore river ecosystems.
12. How can I get a quote or start a project with you?
